THERAPEUTIC RECREATION PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION 2007 STUDENT SITE VISITS Eastern Washington University Coordinator: Diana Thew, CTRS/R In December, the therapeutic recreation students from Eastern Washington University presented to a panel of TR professionals about the benefits of implementing the Nintendo Wii program into a TR treatment plan. Realizing the benefits for so many populations, we decided that for the purpose of the presentation and the need to place an emphasis on direct outcomes, we focused on three specific populations; pediatrics, geriatrics and veterans. With these three populations targeted, basic information regarding some common associated disabilities and/or illnesses were identified. The presentation provided education and demonstration on how the Wii would be beneficial in relieving, reducing and/or eliminating the effects of those associated disabilities and/or illnesses in order to result in beneficial outcomes. The participants all had the chance to play the games and see just how beneficial the program can be and how adaptations that could be implemented as needed. All had a great time interacting and learning from each other. This was followed by the professional panel answering some of the many questions from the students regarding actual practice, internships and many other topics. Western Washington University Coordinators: Stacy Baunton, CTRS; Randee Young, CTRS Thanks to the efforts of Stacey Baunton, CTRS, and Randee Young, CTRS, as well as the involvement of numerous WSTRA members, the Western Washington University therapeutic recreation students of RECR 421 enjoyed a wonderful two day visit to Seattle in November. Thursday afternoon, students were treated to a tour of the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health System, Seattle Division, on Beacon Hill led by Debbie Pate, MS, CTRS/R. They had to rent a trailer to haul all of the materials Debbie shared with them! Thursday evening, Missy Armstrong, MS, CTRS, hosted a social for students and WSTRA professionals at her home. Besides excellent pizza and terrific company, the students had the opportunity to ask questions (some very difficult and thought provoking ones, at that) and get great advice about therapeutic recreation. On Friday, students visited Swedish Medical Center, Cherry Hill campus, where Jane Germano, CTRS/R, inspired everyone with her dedication and enthusiasm. They then took a short bus ride (and mock bus evaluation) to Harborview Medical Center, where Missy Armstrong, MS, CTRS, Susan Collins, CTRS/R, Tricia Gohl, CTRS/R, Regan Ward, CTRS/R, Crystal Smith, CTRS/R, and Melissa VanderGalien, CTRS/R contributed to a fascinating tour. It was an enriching experience for students, who were impressed by not only everyone’s professionalism, but by their genuine interest in and commitment to students. The next class was filled with so much discussion among students about the exciting visit that their professor, Charles Sylvester, had to postpone his lecture for another day.
