The Recreational Therapist assumes responsibility and accountability for a designated group of patients and provides recreational therapy evaluations and interventions in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, maintaining the highest degree of quality patient care. The Recreational Therapist accurately assesses patients' needs; identifies and initiates appropriate recreational therapy interventions; provides patient and family teaching; and works cooperatively with other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional recreational therapy practice and interdisciplinary teamwork. These functions are carried out according to hospital policy in accordance with the mission and vision of the hospital and consistent with the philosophy of the department. The Recreation Therapist participates in performance improvement and program development activities. Responsibilities include providing input into the budgetary planning process; contributing to cost effectiveness of services and programs provided by the department; communicating the employee's observations and suggestions related to opportunities for improvement; and maintaining positive relations with all customers. Minimum Qualifications 1. One year experience (three years preferred) working in a rehab unit or equivalent experience in work, education or training. 2. Graduate of a Therapeutic Recreation program from an accredited university. 3. Certification by the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation. 4. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the unit. 5. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age specific needs and to provide care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. 6. Must be able to clearly and effectively communicate with all stakeholders (patients, families, peers and other healthcare team members) as needed for assessment, intervention and professional development. 7. Must be able to operate therapeutic exercise and modality devices including but not limited to: electronic equipment, exercise equipment, hydrotherapy equipment, electrical lifts, ambulation devices, wheelchairs, stretchers, medical monitoring devices, computer, telephone and dictation equipment.
