ABOUT Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is the provision of Recreational Therapy (RT), Special Recreation and Inclusive Recreation. Recreational Therapy is a treatment service using recreational activity as a modality that is designed to restore, remediate or rehabilitate a person's level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness as well as to reduce or eliminate the activity limitations or restrictions to participate in life situations caused by an illness or disabling condition. Recreational Therapists are professionals who provide a critical health care service that restores, remediates and rehabilitates functional capacity for people with injuries, chronic illnesses and disabilities. Special Recreation is a community service providing recreational opportunities and experiences to facilitate leisure involvement, recreation and play specifically directed to people with physical, cognitive, emotional or social limitations in order to in order to promote their health and well-being and improve quality of life. Inclusive Recreation is a community service facilitating equal access of recreational opportunities and experiences to all people who wish to participate regardless of their abilities and limitations. A primary activity of TR/RT is to help clients learn to adapt activities of interest. WSTRA sponsors an adaptive golf clinic implemented by VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The purpose of the clinic is to introduce adaptive golf to people with disabilities from throughout the region as well as to teach therapists and golf pros the ins and outs of adaptive golf.
